This subject introduces students to the foundations of data journalism, a suite of practices for collecting, analysing, verifying, visualising and publishing data for journalistic purposes. Students extend their abilities as reporters by developing data-focused research skills, and are introduced to basic tools and techniques of data-driven reporting. They learn strategies for finding original datasets, identifying stories in datasets and using data to support their reporting. They develop the capacity to critically assess and verify data, practice techniques for mining and cleaning data with the aim of producing information visualisations, and learn how to embed these data visualisations into online platforms. Students are introduced to the future of emerging journalistic technologies such as drone, sensor and virtual and augmented reality journalism and computational journalism.
