Description

This subject requires students to develop their pedagogical knowledge and skills through their investigation of established research and scholarship in English as a subject. Students analyse and evaluate theoretical frameworks, models of English teaching and research findings in the discipline and apply their insights to the development of units of work and sequences of individual lessons for Stages 4, 5 and 6. The work and implications of significant English curriculum scholars as well as research into approaches to student writing, teacher talk, listening and speaking and assessing learning in the English classroom are investigated. In addition, specific 'watershed' developments including the introduction of public education in NSW; the release of the first NSW secondary English course in 1912; the UK Newbolt Report of 1921; the Dartmouth Conference of 1966; the UK Bullock Report of 1975; the NSW junior English Syllabus of 1971; the 1987 Writing K–2 (DoE) document; and the 2012 English K–10 Syllabus are analysed and evaluated and relevant insights integrated into classroom planning documents.
