Overview

This course is an exit point in a program of study designed to enable students to achieve a comprehensive and greater understanding of information technology in specialised technical or management areas. The wide range of specialisations allows students to tailor the course to satisfy their career development needs.

It is essential to keep IT knowledge and skills up to date. This program provides students with an enhanced understanding of the business context and technical developments shaping contemporary information and communications technology (ICT), and equips them to meet the challenges of working in the IT industry.

Course aims

The program provides students with an understanding of the advanced concepts of information technology in a commercial environment so they can contribute to the development of IT solutions in their organisation.

Career options

Career options include a wide variety of positions in the IT industry, including business intelligence expert, e-business developer, games developer, information systems manager, IT security analyst, IT security manager, ICT security analyst, IT security consultant, pen testing, IT project manager, movie animator, software architect, software quality/testing specialist and systems analyst.

Course intended learning outcomes

A.1 Graduate Diploma in Information Technology graduates are culturally and historically well informed, able to work as respectful professionals with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
B.1 Graduate Diploma in Information Technology graduates engage a broad range of diverse stakeholders to develop a shared understanding of IT related values, needs, and priorities, evaluate performance requirements (such as social, environmental, capital expense, safety, operational, maintenance, and reliability, quality and cost effectiveness) of novel technological problems and their impact on society.
C.1 Graduate Diploma in Information Technology graduates apply design and decision making methodologies and technologically related practices to propose IT solutions and implementation strategies for those solutions, evaluate system sustainability, constraints, risks, conflicts and uncertainties (social, economic and environmental) in solution design.
D.1 Graduate Diploma in Information Technology graduates evaluate concepts and theories in Information Technology and its different areas of practice and design (Software, Hardware, Networking and IT related areas), review the impacts of IT/IS solutions using ethical, social, commercial and environmental metrics of success.
E.1 Graduate Diploma in Information Technology graduates communicate in a variety of ways (accurate and active listening, dialogue, reading, writing, negotiating and contractually) to coordinate diverse teams and projects, collaborate formally and informally to engage and manage stakeholders.
F.1 Graduate Diploma in Information Technology graduates self-review their own practice, anticipate consequences of intended actions or inaction and identify ethical dilemmas when they arise, seek constructive reviews to improve themselves to ensure currency in their technological skills.
