Overview

The Master of Economics is for students who may be required to transfer from the Doctor of Philosophy because they did not pass the:

  • two comprehensive exams at the end of Year 1
  • required paper at the end of Year 2 (Stage 1 Assessment), or
  • required paper at the end of Year 3 (Stage 2 Assessment).

Career options

Career options include management-level positions in industry or government, and academic positions.

Course intended learning outcomes

1.1 Demonstrate expert knowledge of the theoretical underpinnings of economics necessary for a career in research or professional practice
1.2 Apply expert knowledge of research principles and concepts to evaluate complex theoretical and/or empirical issues in economics
2.1 Critically evaluate existing knowledge and thinking in economics
2.2 Apply critical and creative thinking to research issues in economics and related areas
3.1 Covey knowledge and ideas cogently in high quality written form appropriate for academic and/or professional audiences
3.2 Use oral communication effectively to present and explain existing knowledge and ideas
4.1 Know and analyse the core professional obligations, methods, and values appropriate to economic research
5.1 Apply technical and professional skills necessary to plan and execute a piece of scholarship

Course duration and attendance

The maximum course duration is two years of full-time or four years of part-time study.

Course structure

For students transferring to the Master's after Year 1 of the PhD

Year 1: All subjects undertaken as part of the PhD program are credited towards the Master of Economics for students who do not pass the two comprehensive exams at the end of Year 1 and want to exit with the Master of Economics.

For students transferring to the Master's after Year 2 and Year 3 of the PhD

All the subjects undertaken as part of the PhD program are credited towards the Master of Economics for students who do not pass the required paper at the end of Year 2 or who do not pass the required paper at the end of Year 3.

Students in this Master’s degree are required to pass all subjects taken to complete the degree.
